There won’t be enough time to build a new set of walls every time you are notified about an attack coming from a new direction. Luckily, there are a few toys in Mr. Riggs’ arsenal that can help you, and landmines are one of them. The mines come in the form of consumable, one-use items, just like a repair kit. You can carry a limited number of them at a time and there is a cooldown after each use. The mines also have a limited lifetime, so you can’t just spam them around the base and not worry about anything ever again. They will require you to engage the enemy and lure them into a trap. The risk is great, but so is the reward. The amount of explosives in the mines is enough to wipe out a whole pack of monsters at once. The Heart of Your Base - the Headquarters: The Headquarters is the most important building in the field base. It does not matter where you are going to travel - the Headquarters is designed to provide for the Riftbreaker’s basic needs regardless of the outside conditions. It is your responsibility to pack enough resources to build one as soon as you arrive through the Rift. Failure to do so will require you to immediately start searching for resources in the unknown, which may result in death. The facilities contained within the building produce food, recycle water, and harvest energy to sustain the Riftbreaker and their Mecha-suit. It is vital to remember that the suit is entangled with the Headquarters. The advantage to this solution is that the suit does not have to be anywhere near the base to collect supplies - it happens automatically over distance. The main danger is being surrounded by a group of several specimens and being attacked by more than one simultaneously.Canoptrix live in packs. They count usually not more than 25 specimens. It subsists on a diet of smaller prey, hunting in groups. During a famine, it will also devour cadavers. It usually attacks weaker and smaller prey. In the face of a predator, the Canoptrix try to hide among small bushes and bigger roots. If feeling threatened or if their territory has been trespassed, they will attack in larger groups, trying to surround the enemy.The Canoptrix are one of the most common animals Ashley will encounter upon arrival to Galatea 37. Their strength lies in numbers. They are not very aggressive by nature, but the Riftbreaker’s presence on their planet will enrage at least some packs, which means your base will get attacked by them. The groups you encounter in the wild will vary in their behavior. Some of them will simply ignore you as long as you don’t mess with them. Others will run on sight. Examining the Canoptrix specimens you find might reveal some interesting facts about the planet’s wildlife and food chain. Adventure, economy, and strategy are all glued together in the game by hack’n’slash action-RPG elements. There’s going to be thousands of monsters to slay and items to collect, but in order to survive that, Ashley will need to make sure that Mr. Riggs is equipped with the right tools to survive the dangers of Galatea 37. One of such tools is the Energy Shield.The Energy Shield is an item you can equip to either of Riggs’ hands. Upon activation, a force field will be projected, blocking matter from passing through and protecting the front side of the Mecha-Suit from taking damage. The shield is slightly curved, but does not entirely cover the sides, and the rear is not protected at all. Therefore, the Energy Shield does not guarantee perfect safety at all times and using it effectively in melee combat is a bit of a challenge. Ranged combat is where the Shield truly shines. It is not a problem for Mr. Riggs to hold the shield up and shoot the weapons mounted on his other hand, so you can stay protected while skirmishing with some acid-spitting or rock-throwing baddies. Apart from measuring the contents of the atmosphere and surface temperature, it is of utmost importance to gain knowledge about the planet’s rotation. Determining the length of the day cycle will provide the Riftbreaker invaluable information as to whether or not they will have the time to set up a field base before dark. This is especially significant on inhabited planets, as nocturnal creatures often display aggressive traits. If one of the Riftbreakers finds themselves stranded in the dark, seek immediate shelter. It is an upgrade we are very excited about, as it gives us more tools to build the game’s atmosphere and mechanics. Such a cycle will also allow us to bring the whole world to life - some creatures will be impossible to find during the day, while others will hide during the night. That means you will most likely not encounter life forms commonly found on Earth. Even though there are many similarities between Galatea 37 and our homeworld (which is why this planet has been chosen as a suitable place to colonize), evolution has taken a different path there.That goes not only for animals, but the plants as well. They come in many shapes and sizes that you wouldn’t expect them to. Ranging from enormous trees with crystalline structures glowing on top of them, to weird, bubbly growths appearing on rocks and cliffs. Each biome you explore will reveal new kinds of plants, and while some of them might look familiar, they are nothing close to what you find on Earth.Ashley will be able to collect samples of vegetation along the way. Doing research on those can provide a lot of knowledge about this new world. Who knows, perhaps there will be some useful substances to be found there as well? Your technology can benefit immensely from observing the nature and copying it, so only time will tell.The flora of Galatea 37 also changes based on the time of day and environmental conditions. At night some plants start glowing bright with beautiful colours, others change shape. We’re pretty sure we saw some of them following Ashley’s’ movement. Unlimited Power!: The Rift Technology is incredible. It can send almost anything across any distance at an instant, opening up paths that were previously inaccessible for humans. There is one limitation that keeps us from conquering the whole universe - it is impossible to transport electric energy without storing it first. That is why it is a priority for every Riftbreaker to establish a robust energy network as soon as possible after arriving to a new world.Luckily, it is not as difficult as it sounds. The first thing you will need is a generator. They can vary in type, output, and size, but more on that later. After you’ve got your generator up and running, use the energy connectors to start powering the buildings up. Connectors are very simple to use. Place one near a building and it will automatically extend connection cables to it. The connector will also detect any new compatible structures in its vicinity and connect them to the network as well. Once the energy connectors are in place and enough power is brought into the network, the buildings will start their operations. Note that adjacent buildings do not require a connector to make energy transfer possible.There are multiple energy sources you can utilize. The one that is right for your base will mostly be determined by what you can access with the most ease. You should not try to make use of everything you find at once, as it will be highly inefficient and waste a lot of your much limited resources. However, once you are ready to complete your mission that will change. Producing and storing as much energy as possible will be necessary to power a rift back home. Make use of carbon. It is present in some form on almost every planet that supports life. If there is life, there must also be death, decay and their byproducts. Check if decomposing animals and plants produce flammable gases. Scan the geodetic structure of the planet. You might be able to utilize geothermal processes or tectonic movements to power your equipment. If there is access to radioactive isotopes on the planet, do not hesitate and build a nuclear power plant. Once you have your power needs covered, build a fusion reactor. Liquid resources and how we use them: The hours I spent analyzing samples and doing research finally paid off. Some time ago Mr. Riggs suggested taking samples of the green substance we’ve been finding in ponds all around this place. It turns out that the sludge itself isn’t too useful - it’s just decomposing organic matter. What is useful, on the other hand, is the byproduct of this decomposition, the gas. It seems to be very flammable and much more concentrated than the stuff we could find on Earth. I will try to take advantage of this and set up a power plant running on this fuel. Mr. Riggs has pulled out some schematics for it out of his database. I’ve modified a couple of things in the blueprints, hopefully, the sludge won’t clog up the systems outright. If everything goes right, we will have enough juice to run this base forever. If it doesn’t… well, at least we will go out in the blaze of glory.- Captain Ashley S. The liquids are especially interesting since you will have to plan and build pumps and pipelines to make use of them. The fact that you can’t build anything else on the pipelines will pose interesting planning challenges.
